Portchester Bowling Club was established in 1986 to serve the needs of bowlers in the Portchester area.
It quickly gained a reputation as a club that welcomed both new and experienced bowlers living in the area and became known as "The Friendly Club".
New and past members are always very welcome at the club and we have overshoes and bowls available for loan to beginners. Call in if you would like to try bowling. We always welcome new members of any age. We have qualified coaches at the Club who can give teaching and will help new players to fully enjoy this relaxing and intriguing sport.
Potential new members are allowed three trial sessions, with coaching, before having to commit to joining the Club.
Guest bowlers are welcome to play but must be accompanied by a full club member at all times. They may only play if there is spare capacity on the rink. They must also pay the current appropriate rink fee. Guest bowlers may not enter any club competitions or represent the club in any capacity.
The club takes an active part in the Gosport & Fareham Triples Leagues during the season. We also have teams entered in the Portsmouth and District mid week triples league for men and also 'C' league for ladies.
During the winter months there is a very active indoor short mat bowling club called Portchester Community Short Mat Bowls Club, who play in the nearby Portchester Community Centre. This is a separate club to us but many of our members also belong to that club.
We have a new (2015) all weather artificial outdoor rink which is ideal for players who perhaps do not have the strength any longer to play on grass.
This gives us an advantage over grass clubs, in that we are not tied to a fixed bowling season.
If the weather is good during the winter months when all the grass rinks are closed you can happily spend a few hours bowling in the open air. Some of our members play outdoors all year round.
